What is the RAYEX S 50/110 and what is it used for?
This article explains what the RAYEX® S 50/110 measuring system is and for which applications it is designed.
What is the RAYEX S 50/110?
The RAYEX® S 50/110 is a static X-ray measuring and control system developed by Zumbach for non-contact, continuous measurement of round products during production.
The system uses X-ray technology to measure product dimensions while the product passes through the measuring tube. It is designed for permanent installation on extrusion and production lines and provides highly accurate, real-time measurement data.
There are two variants:
-
RAYEX® S 50 with a measuring field of 50 mm
-
RAYEX® S 110 with a measuring field of 110 mm
Each variant is optimized for different product diameter ranges.
What is the RAYEX S 50/110 used for?
The RAYEX® S 50/110 is used for the continuous measurement and monitoring of products made from low-absorption materials, such as plastics and light metals.
It is specifically intended for:
-
Measuring diameter
-
Measuring wall thickness (single or multiple layers)
-
Detecting out-of-roundness
-
Measuring eccentricity
Measurements are performed inline, without physical contact with the product, ensuring high precision without affecting the production process.
Typical applications
The RAYEX® S 50/110 is commonly used in:
-
Wire and cable extrusion lines
-
Tube and pipe extrusion
-
Plastic and rubber production
-
Continuous vulcanization (CV) lines
It is ideal for products with a round cross-section and multiple layers, where accurate internal and external dimensional control is required.
Measuring principle (high-level overview)
As the product passes through the measuring tube, it is exposed to X-rays along two axes (horizontal and vertical). X-ray receivers on the opposite side detect the absorbed radiation. Based on this absorption data, the system reconstructs the product’s geometry and calculates dimensional values such as diameter and wall thickness.
This process is performed at high frequency, enabling real-time monitoring of production quality.
Intended use and limitations
The RAYEX® S 50/110 is designed exclusively for:
-
Stationary, fixed installations
-
Inline measurement during production
-
Products with a round cross-section
-
Materials with low X-ray absorption
The system is not suitable for:
-
Measuring living beings
-
Measuring stationary or offline samples
-
Products with non-round cross-sections
-
Highly absorbing materials such as iron or copper
-
Wet or partially wet products
Use outside the intended scope may lead to incorrect measurements and void warranty or liability claims.
